Fontana, Caif. (October 10, 2009) – Kevin Conway and the No. 23 ExtenZe Racing team made a late-race surge to post an 18th-place finish in the Copart 300 at Auto Club Speedway Saturday afternoon.
The weekend began with a solid start as Conway posted the 23rd fastest time in a field filled with 12 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series regulars during practice Friday afternoon. Conway and team drew to go out first in qualifying Saturday morning, which proved to be unlucky as heavy haze and damp conditions resulted in qualifying being pushed back for over half an hour. The No. 23 ExtenZe Chevy lined up 32nd for the 300-mile event.
When the green flag waved Saturday afternoon, Conway quickly radioed to crew chief Jefferson Hodges that the car was way too tight and bottoming out hard. On lap 26 Conway fell one lap down so when the caution flag flew for debris on lap 38 the No. 23 crew went to work making wholesale changes to the ExtenZe Chevrolet.
On lap 42 the field went back to green with the ExtenZe Chevy restarting in 33rd position. Conway radioed that the car felt much better, especially around the top of the race track. He was able to use the high line to move into 26th place, the first car one lap down. The third caution of the day flew on lap 85 and the ExtenZe Chevrolet earned the free pass to get back on the lead lap.
Green flag racing resumed on lap 87 and Conway steadily picked up positions. With a fast car and the help of his ExtenZe Crew, Conway moved into the top-15 and was looking towards a strong finish. However, the team couldn’t catch a break and received left front fender damage after making contact with the No. 98 while racing for position. The damaged fender resulted in a flat left front tire. As Conway limped around the track to bring his ExtenZe Chevy to the pits he fell a lap down and brought out the sixth caution of the day. The flat tire cut the left front break line and knocked the tow out on the car. The No. 23 team brought the car in several times under caution to fix the damage.
Conway was in 32nd place, the only car one lap down, when racing resumed on lap 124. A quick caution one lap later brought the ExtenZe Chevy back on the lead lap after earning the free pass, but Conway was battling tight conditions due to the tow being knocked out. On lap 141 the ninth caution of the afternoon flew and Crew Chief Jefferson Hodges called the No. 23 Chevy into the pits to fix the tow of the car, hoping to pick up a few positions in the final four laps of the race.
The final caution of the day flew with only four laps remaining, setting up a green-white-checkered shootout. Conway took the green flag in 23rd place and was able to pick up five positions in the final two-lap shootout, bringing home an 18th-place finish. The finish puts R3 Motorsports in 26th position in the NASCAR Nationwide Owners Standings, only 11 markers behind 25th.
The Nationwide tour heads home to Lowe’s Motor Speedway next Friday night for the Dollar General 300. Live race coverage begins on ESPN2 at 7:30 p.m. EDT and will be broadcast live on PRN Radio at 7:15 p.m. EDT.
